Pictograph, Reverse Hand Prints, Colorado Plateau, Arizona, 8-20-05
This photograph documents a "prehistoric" pictograph made by spraying
carbon pigment upon one's hand while placed on the sandstone wall. This
trace pattern may be well over 1,000 years old. Knowledge of this style
of pictograph (sprayed black pigment, negative hand print) seems to suggest
this is unusual for the region. The Plateau was inhabited by pre-puebloan
hunter-gatherers (500 AD and earlier) as well as early Puebloan cultures.
